Renovation of a 1903 pre-revolutionary apartment by architect Vasily Shaub
Rather than undertaking a complete overhaul, the design strategy emphasized decorative enhancements over structural changes. The primary objectives were to optimize spatial proportions and elevate the apartment's status, all while respecting the building's historical context. This included incorporating plaster elements into the interior and furnishing the space with contemporary furniture and appliances.
The apartment features a spacious living room and kitchen-dining area, complemented by a private zone comprising two children's bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, a master suite, and a separate men's walk-in closet.
Key design interventions included the addition of mirrors and quartzite wall finishes to enhance spatial depth and create seamless transitions between modern and classical elements. Gypsum details were introduced on ceilings and walls to complement existing moldings around doorways.
The color palette is soft and elegant, dominated by neutral tones and accented with olive-colored drapes in the living room and dark elements like coffee tables. In the bedroom, two vibrant natural leather armchairs serve as focal points. Overall, the interior design strategy employed light-toned walls, neutral furniture, and bold color accents through smaller furniture pieces, accessories, and artwork.
This project provided a valuable experience in reimagining existing architectural interiors, highlighting the potential within the original structure. The resulting mix of furniture, finishes, and accessories achieved a charismatic and elegant ambiance. Notably, the client's active involvement in selecting artwork contributed significantly to the interior's unique character and the family's personal expression.
